Pittsburgh Pirates Roster Report 2009-09-07

--3B Neil Walker got his first major-league hit by lining a single to right field in the eighth inning off Jason Motte. It was a special moment for Walker, who was hitless in his first eight at-bats, as he grew up rooting for the Pirates in suburban Pittsburgh.

--RHP Jesse Chavez notched his first major-league victory despite giving up a pinch-hit home run to Rick Ankiel that put St. Louis ahead 5-4 in the top of the ninth before the Pirates rallied with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Chavez has been scored on in three of his last outings, allowing four runs in three innings during that span.

--2B Delwyn Young did not start as manager John Russell felt he needed a day to clear his head but wound up flying out as a pinch hitter in the sixth to extend his streak of hitless at bats to 14. Young is 5-for-49 (.102) in his last 12 games, dropping his batting average from .311 to .277.
