Before You Write to Us

Piratesdaily is a small, independent site devoted to the history, legends and seafaring stories of the pirate world. Messages from readers are welcome, and a little detail in your email helps us give you a useful reply. Here are some of the reasons people get in touch, and a few pointers on what to include.

Corrections and sources

Pirate history is full of tall tales, many of them first printed in the eighteenth century and repeated ever since. We try to separate what the historical record supports from what belongs to legend, but we do not always get it right. If you spot an error in one of our articles, please tell us which page it is on, what you think is wrong and, where possible, the source you are relying on: a court record, a contemporary newspaper, a ship's log or a published scholarly work. Specific references let us check the point properly and update the article if needed.

Questions and topic suggestions

Curious about how pirate crews divided their plunder, why certain ports tolerated them, or how the stories of figures such as Blackbeard grew over time? Send us your question. We cannot promise an individual answer to every message, but good questions often become future articles. Our pieces on the Golden Age of Piracy and Anne Bonny and Mary Read are good places to see the kind of subject we cover.

What we can't help with

We are not a museum, archive or tour operator, and we do not sell or book anything. We also cannot value artefacts, authenticate treasure maps or offer genealogical research. For those, a specialist museum, maritime archive or qualified appraiser is the right place to ask.
